It is considered as one of the five best-preserved caves of Greece and the first one in Crete. It belongs to the Natural Park of Psiloritis, which is protected by UNESCO.
The cave takes up a surface of over 3,000 m2 and the length of the touring path of the visitors is about 270 m. Many stalactites and stalagmites of different colors and shapes decorate the 14 rooms of the cave. Also, you can see the so-called “cave pearls”, a type of speleothem, a concretion of calcium salts which forms in limestone caves and resemble pearls. Finally, the glow coming from the tiny crystals of calcium carbonate is particularly impressive.
Depending on the season take a chance to learn saved local Cretan traditions of the past in the nowadays lifestyle in the stone made Shepherd’s House. See the sheep milking, join the cheese-making, the sheep-shearing and after sheep wool weaving. The Wooden Sculptures Museum at the center of Crete and at the foot of the sacred mountain of Psiloritis is a permanent collection of the sculptor George Koutantos. In a natural landscape, more than one hundred handmade work arts made from a hummer and a chisel. The dimensions of the sculptures are in natural size, while some of them are presented in bigger dimensions, such as «The Eagle and the Snake» approximately six meters long, «My Parents and I» approximately three meters height, «The Little Mermaid» five meters long. The timbers were collected from different parts of Crete, mainly dead trees or eradicated from natural destructions.
