Paleochora is a small town in the South of Crete facing the Libyan Sea. It is a unique town with great charm and cultural color which the locals use to call it “the nymph (bride) of the Libyan Sea”. It is situated on a peninsula between two bays being only 70 km from Chania in the North. Paleochora offers so much to enjoy in an exquisite setting devoid of clutter, cacophony and concrete skyscrapers that stain the modern world. Paleochora beaches are famous for their pristine beauty!
On this tour, you can choose between two very beautiful beaches, very different from each other. The First is to the East and is a beautiful pebble beach called Chalikia where the atmosphere is relaxed and calm among the locals. If a beautiful pebbly beach isn’t for you then situated just to the West is the endlessly long sandy beach called Pachia Ammos. Also situated in the bay of Gramenos this beach can offer tranquility but also a little adventure if you would like to do a little windsurfing.
If you’re looking for great food and drink then there are plenty of pubs, restaurants, and cafes where you can relax under the Southern Sun in this idyllic town of Paleochora.
If you fancy a little bit of the region’s history then why not visit the Venetian Castle “Selino” which is situated on the hill jutting out to sea. This was built by Marino Gradonigo (the then Duke of Crete) in 1282 originally as a fortress but then was torn down by the rebels which meant that the fort was demolished. Eventually, it was rebuilt into a castle in 1334 by the Venetians and in later years the town of Paleochora was born. Translated from Greek, the word “Selino” means Celery. It is thought that the Castle was given this name because of the rich abundance of this crop within the area. Today this castle is a must-see for Venetian Ruins and can be included in this tour as an optional extra.
